We have tested with ~1000 emails in the inbox. It took a while but everything worked fine.

were there large attachments in any of these emails?

1) yes, then it is a memory issue then.
2) we will test with 5mb files, and look into our code, but there is a possibility that the memory issue is going to be within the javamail api. i.e. it is possible that there is not much we will be able to do about this from within our code.
3) As a workaround you might try to schedule more frequently so that fewer attachments are downloaded every task instance.

Please send us the logs for the task (help menu / email support generator).. Select task in task to analyze field. Then click on ZIP button and email us the support.zip file.

Also, just as a test:
run the email check task in a chain and loop it 2-3 times in succession. Does it pick up any new attachements in the 2nd or 3rd loop task run?
